    NHRC Commends Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for Commitment to Human Rights Protection

    The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu, has commended the Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his administration’s steadfast commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights in the state.

    Dr. Ojukwu made the commendation when he paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, in Kano today. He explained that the visit was aimed at strengthening institutional collaboration between the NHRC and the Kano State Government in advancing human rights and social justice.

    The NHRC Executive Secretary outlined key areas of partnership which include: enhancing operational synergy between the Commission’s Kano Office and relevant state institutions; promoting human rights education and awareness among public officers, traditional and religious leaders, as the well as the general public ensuring human rights compliance within the state’s justice and security sectors; and collaborating on initiatives to prevent and address human rights violations particularly those affecting women, children, persons with disabilities and detainees.

    He further highlighted the Commission’s interest in joint interventions in peacebuilding, social inclusion and community engagement.

    In his response, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, assured the NHRC of the Kano State Government’s readiness to deepen collaboration with the Commission in promoting and protecting the rights of citizens.

    He emphasized that, under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration, significant reforms have been introduced to safeguard human rights.

    According to him, police prosecutors are gradually being phased out and replaced with qualified lawyers to ensure professionalism, due process and fairness in the justice system delivery

    Comrade Waiya also noted that the Kano State Hisbah Board has been further empowered by the present administration to handle matters related to social justice and human rights with professionalism and compassion, and has tremendously recorded significant milestones in restoring and protecting the rights of the weak and vulnerable in the society

    He thanked the NHRC for its commitment and reaffirmed the government’s continuous support in advancing the protection and promotion of human rights for all Kano residents
